I made a nesting box to add on as my first improvement.
Among the other improvements I have in mind is to rebuild underneath. It currently has a short pedestal of 2x6 on edge on three sides to facilitate moving with a forklift, and while a forklift might be fun, I just don't have one, and it wouldn't fit in the yard anyhow, so I need to make the boards there into more of a runner sort of deal to faciliitate dragging around, and even put some wheels on it. I'd love to find an old radio flyer or even a lawnmower to use for wheel chassis. Then I'll want to affix the pen to the coop and make it a true chicken tractor. And there has to be a paint job. Any ideas on the best cheap paint to use?
And then I'll get the hens. I'm thinking Rhode Island reds and barred rock. A friend has them and is quite fond of them. I'd love to have one each of four fairly diverse breeds, though common.
