A man near me has some hens for sale. They have been laying for 1 full year now. They are 5 dollars and I think thats a great deal. So if I get them, how many years can I expect eggs from them?

It does sound like a good deal! I paid almost that much for chicks and then paid quite a bit more to raise them up to the point of laying.

I've heard that production birds like Golden Comets lay really well for 2-3 years and then taper off.

I don't know for sure how long they lay- I had one a while back and she was terrific, but died from something else at about 4- still laying strong. I now have round two of golden comets, but they are only about 7 months old. I would guess that with good care they would lay for much longer than 2-3 years. I think they would be more likely to taper off in a situation with hundreds of chickens just for egg production than in a small backyard situation. Just my opinion though-
