how many inches of bedding should you put down on the coop floor?

It really can very. What are you using? are you doing deep litter? how often do you clean it out? I use use some chips on top of some DE. In the next coop I plan on doing deep litter

Even with deep litter, I only start with a couple of inches. It becomes deep, as I gradually add more. If you start with it really deep in the beginning, it's just a lot more work to stir. I'm such a radical!

No matter what method you use, you want enough litter to cover the floor. If it's too thin a layer, they'll move it around as they are going about their business, walking, scratching a bit and you'll see the floor in spots. Then you know you didn't put in enough and you need to add more.

Good random estimate: 4 inches

Started out with 3 inches in July 2009 - now up to 12 inches.
I'll empty it, clean it well and start all over again next month.
