4 ft per standard in the coop, 10 ft squared for in the run. with a 42 square foot coop you could fit about 10.5. best stay at 10. do you have a 100 square foot run?

I was told one time that the 4sq ft per bird measurement is most important if you are keeping your chickens confined in their house. If they are allowed to run in and out you can get by with less space per bird. Make sure you have enough roost space for them too. How much roost space can you make?

You can put 10 in that space at 4 sqft per bird if they have 100 sqft outside. You can reduce that to 3 sqft per bird which is 14 birds if they have adequate access to the outdoor run. You will need about 8" of roost space per bird...
