Just wondering how much it cost to build a coop and run for bout 6 chicken. I know there are a lot of variables. I am trying not to buy new materials (except for wire ). I am getting wood from ReStore. I just hope I can do it for $100-$200, or cheaper would be even better:D. Is that reasonable?? Any other frugal ideas?

btw I am making myself crazy looking at everyones ideas...I am definetly over thinking this project. and a side note, neither my hubby nor I have building experience.

You should be able to do it. I just built a chicken tractor with all new 2x4's but plywood from Habitat for humanity and also latches from there as well. I think I payed total about $120 in materials. Oh, I also bought the hardware cloth brand new. I found some nice scrap wood in Home Depot as well. Check out some of the cool coops people made out of free pallets. Good Luck!!!!! I had a blast building both my coops.

I used the most money on my floor which is the recycled plastic floor never rots ect. the rest went for hardware cloth and shingles I reused wood pallets and plywood for the walls and nest boxes the door is part old shower door and left over wood. Inside doors are also old shower doors. Sit down think what you want to spend money on then look for the rest in other places.

I built mine for $208, new materials and shingled it to boot. Though the stain was free.

I've no frugal ideas more than your doing but agree that it's the variables that put coop prices higher. The biggest of course being good enough for us humans. The chickens can get by prefectly happy with much less.

I used wood pallets, and spent maybe $60 on wood, hardware, and wire. I already had roofing material, nails, and other materials that I used for nest boxes and roosts. Most of my supplies came from thrift stores, restore, and craigslist ads. My coop is 8 x 12, and houses 12 chickens.
Building a coop on a budget is definitely do-able.

so far I haven't spent a dime. But I will need hinges and things later on that will be a few bucks. I am doing mine out of all free stuff that I have around the farm.

You know, I don't think you can actually "over-think" it - I know you can get OBSESSED with it (I did, anyway), but the more thought and planning and research you do, the better your coop will work for you, and the fewer revisions you'll probably have to do, which saves you money in the long run, and makes the coop a pleasant, practical place... so think on!
