I realize there are a lot of variables here, but bare with me. It's Fair week and the kids (aka me) are scrambling to complete their projects. This year's project was meat birds, and like a dummy, I did not hold onto every receipt and am now in a bind. My calculations put us at about 21 lbs of feed per bird over a 9 week period. Could this be right? I feel like we are really off here.

it could be right, at 8 weeks im feeding about a half pond a day per bird so to my clculations works out to aprox 21-25 pounds of feed per bird over the 9 week period.

Seems high....

Are you feeding 24/7?

You should be somewhere between 11-15lbs
With 15 being the high side. Fees 12 on and 12 off.

Your numbers are way high

I thought they might be high, but it looks like we are at the same numbers as the other 4Hers. Also, we are at 10 weeks, not 9 (my bad) and I just opened the last 50lb bag of feed yesterday, so that should get us through till next week (I hope!). I guess when we get their weights, that will be the real test. And, you were right, we haven't been diligent about removing food 12 hrs a day. We were feeding 24/7 at first, for the last 3 weeks, we are feeding less, but not by much. I sure hope their finished weights are reflected in the huge amount of feed we purchased.

Well, keep us in the loop.

The kids weighed the biggest bird they found in the bunch, by weighing themselves with and without fat bird (I don't have a proper scale). The weight they got was 12 lbs. I have NO idea if this live weight is good or not, or how accurate. 8 of the birds were dropped off at fair tonight, they get judged tomorrow morning. Hope the kids do well! :D

The numbers might seem high but my birds are fed 12/12 and have been since week three. the only way I could lower the numbers to 11-15 would be to feed for 3 on 3 off and repeat til the 12th hour. This is not possible as I would have to bee in the coop every three hours which is just ludicriss. Birds are 9 weeks now and will go for processessing at week 10.5 I will report actuall size when they go for processessing.
