So I have a small brown leghorn pullet that's days away from laying I think (huge red floppy comb/wattles, bright red face, and egg squatting for the past few days) I just bought her what looks like a high quality organic none gmo soy and corn free layer feed that is supplemented with plenty of oyster shell mixed in. I was wondering how much a day I should be giving her? I was thinking 1/2 cup - 1 cup a day plus full all day access to fresh clean water, and the daily fresh veggies, fruits or live meal worms I give her as a healthy yummy treat for her. Please let me know if this is enough for her. I don't wanna under or over feed her. The brand of feed I bought is H and H soy/corn free organic none gmo feed on eBay. I bought her the green tag layer feed. Thank you!!

Her primary diet should be either a balanced layer feed after the first few eggs, or a flock raiser type diet. Either is fed free choice, with oyster shell in a separate container, also free choice. Other stuff is supplemental, no more than 10% of her total diet. I hope she's not a solitary hen! Leghorns are bred to produce lots of eggs per year, which is a huge metabolic workload, so the base diet must be very balanced or things won't go well. Mary

I realize this. I do not feed her to many treats.
I have her on a high quality grower feed right now and the makers of the really good layer feed I ordered do not recommend oyster shell on the side as there is enough in the feed itself already. Too much calcium can cause egg deformity I hear. So don't want to over supplement her. She has plenty of grit given to her. I realize leghorns are very busy egg layers, I've had them before. But that was a huge flock. She is my only chicken though, so she isn't going to need as much food put out I'd think but yes she is solitary in the sense she has no chicken friends but she is certainly not a unhappy bird. She has a lots of loving human friends who just adore her and pay loads of attention to her. Anyways, my big question and my only question is how much food, free choice should I be giving her a day?

Why not keep her feeder full and let her eat as much as she wants? If you don't do that, then how do you expect 90% of her diet to be the feed?

Also, I don't think chickens can thrive without a flock, since they are kinda like sheep in that way. Having only one seems kinda cruel.

That's your views. She is perfectly happy.
I know how chickens act when they are sad, mad, stressed, and happy. She displays no negative emotions. She is very lively, loves and craves the affection if her humans. So please stick to this topic and do not call me out for something that is NOT cruel. If I thought she was unhappy I would have done something about it. But she's not unhappy.

This thread needs no further replies. I will do what I should have done earlier and just ask the lovely people who make the feed I order for her on their thoughts. I will flag this thread for deletion.
