-definitely think that a larger scale operation (especially if growing for meat and eggs) is more profitable. -the backyard flock is a family fun project with the benefit of fresh eggs, IMO. -not profitable at all financially. We still really enjoy it, though!

Here in the appalachian region I pay $16.84 tax and all for a 50# bag of starter/grower.

Mexico here, can get a 40k bag of layer or grower for 260pesos, about 20 dollars. will last me three months. for 4 barred rocks, 4 silkies, 2 seramas, and two muts.
so 40k is 88lbs.
little bit less than 50 cents per k
about a quarter a lb, pretty cheap if I say so.

recently had a tax increase on pet food, but only dogs and cats are considered pets here. so all other feed stayed the same.
