Hi friends!

I’m expanding my flock size and looking for a new layer feed. Ideally this feed would be complete layer pellets with adequate protein, calcium, and vitamins. Something similar to Purina Layena would be great, just not name brand and the price that comes with it.

Additionally I would love if it could be shipped to my house and at a price point under $0.40/lb. But I don’t want low-quality or bottom-shelf.

Any suggestions?

A local mill - if you have one - is probably your best bet. You don't say where you are, so I can't offer suggestions.

Were you in Mid TX, I'd say check out West Feeds. NW Florida, Southern Alabama, and surrounding? Tucker Milling. I use HMC (Harrell Milling) but you would probably call it Bottom Shelf - though it works very well for my needs. There's a couple NY feeds w/ good numbers, I don't know their local price points.

How much is Chewy going to cost you to ship in Kalmbach???

Gotcha! Yea, I’m in south denver so I’ll look for a mill near me. The Murdochs around here has bottom shelf feed at $16/50lb pellets or ~$0.30/lb. But I would probably have to supplement with calcium and other vitamin-rich foods.

Chewy has either Kalmback for $0.46/lb or Kent Blue Seal for $0.49/lb.

I did find VibrantLife on Walmart that ships for free at $0.31/lb and it looks mid-shelf. But it appears this is a sale and may not be a consistent price. If the sale ends it jumps to $0.50/lb.

Check these guys out. https://www.gehmanfeedmill.com/feeds/poultry

Look to be in your area. I don't know their price points or labels - they don't seem to publish on line, but hopefully it points you in the right direction. If you are unsure, snap some photos of the guaranteed feed labels w/ your cell phone, post them here. We will help.

Sorry, that's Denver PA! I'll look some more at lunch.

Just a thought about price per pound: it might sometimes be misleading. For instance, whole grain-type feed like the various Kalmbach Reserve mixes could be denser (heavier per volume) that highly processed pellets and crumbles. I find that I don’t have to feed as many cops per day of Chickhouse Reserve than I do Kalmbach’s 20% Flock Builder.

In other words, sometimes it’s more meals per bag than cost per pound.

I do realize that budgets are budgets!

These guys https://wardlefeed.com/denver-chickens-and-poultry/ carry Scratch & Peck. I think its overhyped, may be outside your price point target, but not a bottom barrel feed choice.

You might also check out https://curvefeed.com/poultry-feed - more Scratch & Peck, Purina, but they also have Bluebonnet Feeds (I'm not familiar, but they meet the recommended nutritional minimums)

and these guys carry feed from one of your local mills in Agland. https://lewiscluck.com/ Not familiar with this brand either, by the packaging its in your price point, don't know ingredients or nutritional numbers. This stuff from Agland is NOT (in my opinion) adequate:

Anyhow, you have options, hope that helps.

If you are located in the western US, give Eden Feeds a look. You can get it at Murdoch’s. It’s grown in Montana, non-GMO, no corn or soy, and it’s usually in the $30 range for 40#. It’s a really great quality food for a good price point. https://www.murdochs.com/products/p...eds-non-gmo-17-protein-production-layer-feed/
That's about 2x the price point the original poster was seeking - but TY for the link. Not terrible Met levels, and they disclose their Niacin content (too low for Pekins). good to know.
