How much Ivermectin?

How many drops of Ivermectin should I put on my dog? Mites are really bad this time of year, so we thought we'd try this medication. He weighs around 45 or 50 lbs. I read somewhere 1 drop per 6 pounds? So about 7 drops? We're putting it on the back of his neck, btw. Thanks in advance!

What kind of dog? Some types of dogs can't have ivermectin.

It works great for most mites... do you now what kind you are dealing with?

I personally think of cedar oil as more of a repellent than a killer, but have no actual experience with it.

WAIT! First you need to know, if your dog has heart worm, you can possibly kill it. Second, some breeds have a genetic mutation that makes them unable to tolerate ivermectin. What breed or mix do you have? Third, are you sure that your dog has mites? Those are only diagnosed by looking at a skin scraping under a microscope. Don't just assume mites are the cause of itching.

Yes, dog specific mites are usually diagnosed in that way and can cause a type of non contagious mange. They are not usually a problem for dogs with healthy immune systems. So it could be an indicator of something more.... but you can only see the evidence as balding and not the mites themselves.

I wonder... If they are red mites... or what are you seeing? Thinking you would probably know a flea if you saw one...

My itchy dog uses aller-tec (1 daily costco brand Zyrtec) vet recommended as Benadryl was not very effective (recommended first and weight dependent dosage), and this made a HUGE difference in the amount of outbreaks she has. Diphenhydramine or generic Benadryl (sorry for poor spelling of those), is still used for break through itching or reactions. This would be my recommendation to alleviate the symptoms... one confirmation of itch cause has been established. Or other natural anti histamine type things you might use. Funny we looked up a plant she regularly eats in my yard, just the flowers... and found when used externally they are known to have a mild antihistamine effect! We thought she was part cow. But there can be lots of things in the environment and even in feed that might be causing some trouble. Hope he feels relief (and recovery) soon!

Sorry for not replying! We've been busy over the weekend. He is a Boxer/Terrier mix, we didn't buy the cedar oil but did give him a bath and tried some different treatments. It has helped a lot, he is acting much better!
