Ok, well at about 14 weeks I had 2 chicks who were making some very odd, way too close to crowing sounds. My 6 loverly barred rocks had turned traitor and ended up male. I'm now ok with that but....we are leaving for vacation soon. My mom will watch all my pretties but I am afraid the boys might start crowing while I am gone.

After 2 of them made that horrid almost crow sound they stopped. None of the others have made a peep. Nada. Speckled and a few others commented on the pics. So fairly sure they are boys and are doomed for the freezer. I had planned on waiting till they were a bit more filled out before that happened. If I think they are going to get all roostery while I am gone though the hubby may need to do the deed a bit early.

They are now 16 weeks. They seem fully grown or at least the growth is now so slow its hard to notice. Have not grown any more really. Their combs and waddles have not changed any over the past 2 weeks. Sooo when should I start hearing the crows? Once I do hear them if I keep them locked in the coop till later in the morning will that buy us a bit more development time before freezer time?

mine were crowing and the hens starting to lay at 16 weeks, and bI have a 3 week old banty who is crowing, so I don`t think I can help. You don,t want to go to far past 16 weeks, they get tough.
