how much polyvisol infant vitamins do I give a 8 weeker?

Contact firststatevetsupply.com to get the specific medication needed. Recently, I had a silkie with similar symptoms. The turning point came when I took a bent-tip glass eye dropper and filled her crop with warmed (not too hot) turkey and rice babyfood with the antibiotic mixed in. I fed her a couple of droppers full 3 times a day until she was eating on her own. It's not hard to do but you have to be very careful not to get any food or moisture in their lungs. The dropper has to be slid down the throat past the tongue about half an inch. You must wipe the dropper clean and dry each time you insert it into her throat to keep any foreign matter out of her windpipe. I also used an opthomalic antibiotic ointment on her eyes. Get First State to send you the right meds but get some food and polyvisol vitamins (no iron) down into her crop asap to get her started digesting food and prevent dehydration.

I assume you are keeping her warm under a heat lamp?

Good luck, let us know how she does.

no heat lamp...... IN TEXAS.... it is humid and warm enough. She is in my bathroom in a dog carrier with a towel over her at night. Do you think she wants a heat lamp for comfort. The house is 78 degrees apprx. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will contact them.

Most sick birds need heat to replace their lowered body temperature due to no food (fuel for heat) being processed. I put mine in a large rubbermaid tote with shavings and papertowels in the bottom. At one end of the tote I put a heat lamp and draped 1/2 the top opening with a towel. This gave her the choice of sleeping under the lamp and towel to be the warmest, or move to the cooler side if she was too hot. Most of the time she slept in the middle. Since she's alone, she doesn't have the advantage of snuggling up with all the other warm bodies to stay warmer.

Hi Bedste!
I just ran across your post. So sorry to hear your baby isn't doing well.
Please keep us up to date on the progress. I am going to bookmark this thread so I can watch and learn as well.

This morning all the birds of the flock are excellent. They are still mad at me and stop and stare at me when they see me. After vaccinating them two days in a row... (first time I did it all wrong and did not even penetrate the skin)......they are not sure about me.

It is very funny to see them from the window chattering and happy and scratching .... then I open the door .... and they all freeze and hush and wait.....

They used to run to their coop door waiting to greet me... I will be glad when they love me again.... lol

BB (bathroom buff) is the same today. I am giving her 3 drops of vitamins twice a day and warm honey water. I put a drop or two of canned cat food in her mouth with Qtip and this morning Yogurt. Total of about 1/2 tsp if that. She likes the water .... but not the food .. but she eats what little I am able to force in her mouth. Her crop is empty ..... one eye is shut totally due to POX.... other eye still open...

She is not eating or drinking on her own... she only sits and rests..... thanks for the prayers

I am so excited. The HONEY water worked. I offered BB eyedropper with honey water after vitamins this morning and within an hour she is actually drinking water on her own. OMG Thank you for all the advice and support. Hopefully she will be eating again soon too.

I just realized that the HONEY and WATER advice from THREEHORSES was not posted on this thread it was on a personal message. I am posting it incase it helps others with the same issue.

From Bedste;
"The Flock is acting normal as far as eating and drinking. I am giving them scrambled eggs every day too. I have one who started having a runny eye just 2 hours after the vaccine. Isn't that fast?

The only problem I am having is the one in isolation. She is 8 weeks old and one eye totally shut and pox on her face. Her throat looks good so far but she has stopped eating and drinking today. I started her on 3 drops of polyvisol infant vitamins without iron twice a day followed by eyedropper full of water which she seems to enjoy. I got a qtip and put canned cat food on it and I put it in her mouth. Her crop is empty and she does not feel good. If she gets lessions in her mouth HOW DO I REMOVE THEM so she wont suffocate? Is she gonna die?"

From ThreeHorses

"The one with the eye, how big is she? They're very visual when they eat. Are there any marks at the edges of her mouth? If she gets lesions in her mouth, you open it and peel it out. Dissolve some honey in hot water, 4 tablespoons per quart of water - mix those 4 tablespoons in a cup of very very hot water - then put that in the quart container . She'll be more likely to drink it. Make wet crumbles, honey and water and crumbles, and give that to her. They are more likely to take it."

my 3 year old GRANDSON and I made a mixture of chicken food with warm honey water and sat down and fed BB about 10 Qtips dabs of food mixture and a bit of yogurt... with syring of water.. even though I saw her drinking water.... I wanted to make sure to wash the food down too.. We doctored her eye and the spots on the other side of her face and my sweet little grandson Tobias prayed for Jesus to heal her and make her feel better.... She rested on her perch for about 3 hours and when I heard her peeping... I picked her off her perch and put her infront of her food again. THIS TIME SHE ATE! SHE IS EATING! woo hoo! EAting and DRINKING! We are not out of the woods yet but this is a great big step in the right direction and Toby knows it was God who did it... How cool is that?

Thank you so much everyone for all your advice and help and ThreeHorses for the honey suggestion. That made such a difference.

God bless you all and thanks! Woo HOO! BB is going to live....fowl pox is not going to kill her! Thank YOU Jesus!
