how much room for old non laying hens

Hello I been thinking if I have older hens that have stopped laying, do they need as much room in the coop as younger laying hens. I know the general rule is 4 square feet per chicken. im thinking when some of my hens get old I will have a retirement coop. we will let them free range every day, so I been wondering if the 4 square feet per chicken would still apply then.
