How much should I feed my laying hens

I'd recommend having a feeder full of layer feed at all times. Feeders aren't too expensive, and if you provide a feeder with feed, your chickens will eat as much as they need and they will be happy. Hope that helps!

A laying bird, with little natural environment from which to gather free range sustenance, will easily consume 1/4 to 1/3 pound of feed, per day. If your hens look fat and happy, you're likely doing OK by them. If they seem ravenous and there is a feeding frenzy each time you feed, and they choke and gobble up every bit in seconds, you're likely under feeding. Why not put out 2 coffee cans of feed in the morning, in a trough feeder of some kind, and see if they've eaten all of it by night fall? That's the easiest way to determine how much they themselves wish to intake.

Thankyou Fred, that is exactly the answer I was looking for, straight forward and to the point. Now I will feed my chickens (5 in total ..2 pet cochin roosters, 2 great layers Cinnamon Queens and one little Olde English game bird bantam) 4 oz of layer crumble each chicken per day and they can free range in the 1500 sq ft goats pen (where I have built their coop and run) for anything they can scratch up for themselves.

Hey, about your feeding with cat food. Tell me how and what you do in detail please. I would love to know and what you have noticed in feeding it to your hens. Do you feed this to them everyday, once a week, twice. Do you bake it or leave it as a mush?
