I answered an ad on CL for a standard Blue Cochin roo, 9 mos. old.

The woman said a trade or ??? I told her I have nothing to trade (I think she wanted a hen) so asked how much she wants for him.

This being my first rooster purchase, and seeing the dozens that people are trying to give away, how much should I offer her without
offending her?

Thanks!!

I'm guessing, not much experience here. I'd offer $8.00, that should cover the cost of food the roo has consumed from hatching. Since she's offering to trade, must be she's really wanting a good home for him, rather than being forced to put him on the dinner menue.

Depends what quality it is. There are a lot of $10 roosters on craigslist in So Cal, but hardly ever a standard cochin. If any junk roo is $10 I would think a purebred standard cochin should be worth more. What a bird costs to raise is not what it is worth. If you have purebred cochin hens and need a purbred cochin rooster to breed him to, you could sell eggs this season for hundreds of dollars over time. That would make that rooster quite valuable to you. If you just need "a rooster" let me know, i will give you one. I have a very nice silkie boy that needs a home, or I could part with a copper black marans rooster. I have some lavender orp cockerels well started, but they ain't no $10, lemme tell you. Good luck with your bargain. If he is a very nice quality rooster, I'd be asking $50 for him and i would get it. Maybe she doesn't know or care.

I paid $15 a piece for Breeding Quality Standard Cochins from a breeder, they were both 5 months old. I lost one but the remaining one is gorgeous!

Thanks everyone. I paid $10. He's getting a great home...I think that's mostly what the seller wanted. He is very sweet, which is more important to me than his pedigree.
