I have 4 young chukars that I hatched about a month ago. They are currently in a coturnix grow-out pen with 4 coturnix about the same age. I have a person that can make cages for me, basically any size I want.

So how much space would I need for 4 chukars? Do they need to have roosts, or are they ground-dwellers like the coturnix are? How early can they be sexed, and how do I tell?

Any other tips I need to know about them?

Shelley They Are Ground Dwellers, They Usually Dont Require Much Flight Room So A Tall Cage Is Not Needed, They Are Peck Monsters!!! So As Much Surface Space As Possible And A Few Hides Are Very Useful!!! Keep A Can Of Blue Kote Handy--- You'll Likely Needed.

Sexing--- The 1 On Top Is The Roo!

Lol--- Sorry My Sense Of Humor Got The Best Of Me! Seriously Tho I Havent Researched Sexing Yet As My Birds Are Immature Like Yours...

But there isn't any 'x amount of space per bird' thing I can go by?

I am having my friend make some cages for my quail that are 2'x6', would one of these be enough for 4 chukars?

Or do they not need that much?

Is it better to have them on the ground or in raised cages?

I already have some prospective buyers for eggs, provided I have some girls

so I really want to make sure I do this right!

Hey, I just put mine in with my chickens, and they do just fine. The chickens leave them alone, and they love running around in there. My run is 8x16', and 8' tall, and they love to fly around in there. I have a table/cover made of plywood on sawhorses, and they like to sit up there and sun themselves. They like to roost, but also sleep sitting on logs. The article I sent you has a lot of good information in it.

They will be happiest in a setting close to their natural environment. Since they lay anywhere they please, a covered area is a good idea if you want to save the eggs.
Good luck! They're sweet birds!

Not trying to thread jack or anything....but do Chukar do better raised on the ground or on wire? I have a 3ft by 8ft wire bottomed pen I was thinking of using for my Chukar...but a more natural ground pen could be nice too.
Thanks all

Hi, I am also in the process of learning about chukars. Would it be possible to send me the document that was mentionned? I really need to figure out what I will make them for laying their eggs come Spring.
