You're right to warn about fence fighting. I had a cock lose his back toe because of it

I had one PC cockerel fence fight so long (I was gone that day, so I didn't notice) that his face swelled up like a bloody, water filled balloon. He couldn't see for about a week. Poor guy. I always thought he was too wussy to do that---guess not.

It's a strange business fence fighting. For a while here there were a couple of bantam cocks with two hens in a run. The cocks who were free range came to the run and tried to pick fights with the cocks in the run. At a later date, I had the bantams free range and the cocks that used to want to fight them while they were in the run lost interest.

I think we've settled on a coop plan. We went and looked at the carport that we are planning to convert into our coop. Pic attached. Subject to change, of course, but I think it will be a good setup. The brooder pen won't be permanent-we will be able to set it up and take it down as needed. Assuming a max of 30 chickens, this allows for 6-7 sq ft/bird in the coop and 26-60 sq ft/bird in the run depending on what we decide to do. We may start with the smaller run with plans to eventually expand.

Nice. I would go ahead and make the brooder permanent. No real reason to take it down and it will give options if you need to separate anyone for health or behavior.

Edit: also consider nesting boxes by pop door and roost the entire wall. They will all be trying to get the highest spot.

Ditto the nest and roost suggestion.

Brooder area could be a temporary CW wall, put up only when chicks are present.
That's what I do, just a half dozen screws, but I do have space to roll up that wall and store it.

Is the storage cabinet on the floor or above it?
Might want it at least 18" above floor to preserve floor space for the birds.

@aart I packed all of my pencils so I'm doing this in pen and wasting a ton of graph paper in the process! I like the suggestion about raising the storage area....
