How much to feed free range layers

So I was looking for info about something I see with my hens. I have only two hens: a BR and an Australorp.
I get a regular dozen eggs a week give or take, but pretty much 12 a week.
Right now and for the last few months, the girls are free ranging over a heavily treed one acre plot.
They get let out in the morning and they take themselves up each night and then I close them in to deter predators.

The deal is - they are turning their nose up at Layena pellets, which is what they have always eaten since they started laying.

At first I thought they were just not hungry because they forage all day, but it really seems as if they just don't like commercial feed and prefer bugs and worms and grass.

So my curiosity is about whether they ought to be eating pellets, if they only eat it during the winter when they haven't any other options?

Anyone have any thoughts on this or experience anything similar?

If my other pets (dogs, cats) started repeatedly not liking their food, then I would question whether I should continue feeding it...

Have you tried mixing a day's feed with water? On hot days my girls won't touch crumble or pellets, but will happily eat soaked feed.

Theres not much to forage in my yard so they eat both maybe you should try limiting their food outside

If you are going to mix your feed with water, you should try letting it ferment. Mix half feed and half water and stir it 2 or 3 times a day for about 3 days. When it smells soured, it's done. Once you have some soured starter, you can mix fresh feed with it and will be ready in less time.
