When my chicks were in the brooder they constantly pooped on their feeder so when they moved outside we simply dumped the feed in a pile. I would check at lunch and give them another bucket full if it was all gone. And we would give them a fresh scoop at dinner. They are in a very large pen, but not free range. I am worried they aren't getting enough to eat. How do you tell? Should I give a feeder another chance? Any advice is appreciated!

To prevent bacteria and disease, keep feed in a feeder and hang a little off the ground. High enough where they can only barely peck the food. Another alternative is a gravity type feeder. I have a DIY on my site.

If you can hang it or raise the feeder up to chest high it will keep it cleaner. You could also make a feeder that they have to put their head in to reach the feed. If feed is left on the ground they will scratch and waste tons. Good Luck with your new chickens.

A raised feeder is a good idea, and I usually give them as much as they want throughout the day. I free range whenever I can, so the amount of feed they eat can vary from day to day also. They pretty much take as much as they want.Oh, and

Thank you for the help! I will look into a new feeder then. I really appreciate the suggestions!
