I had a women call for eggs tonight. Then she asked if I sold chickens to eat. I told her I didn't have any broilers, but will be processing my cockerells this fall. She wants me to call her. Her husband is hungry for a "good old fashioned" free range chicken. I have no idea how much to charge. Ideas?

Thanks blueskylen, I sold my first 2 birds today.

First hire yourself and figure out how much to pay your new empolyee (you) for your actual labor ( not goofing off time). Next figure out your feed and other overhead costs , rent ( include cost of housing and land), power, gas etc.. So, are you ready to sell more of those birds at THAT price you already sold them for? Is your customer ready to pay more or for the market price? I can buy an already COOKED , 2 pound game hen for $5.00 at the local grocery store any day of the week.

That's true bossroo, but one of the people I sold it to, was an old farmer. His wife says he is craving the taste of a good freerange chicken like he had as a kid. They ordered 5 more when I have them grown. So I guess some people are willing to pay that amount. When I fry our first one tomorrow, I'll know if it's worth it.

It actually depends on your location, but there are ways to market heritage breeds that can bring a premium price. Here free range chicken runs from $3 to $5.50 a pound. California or the east coast would run much higher I would imagine.

don't worry about the price of wal-mart chicken (or whatever grocery store you get a $5.00 cooked chicken at). you are offering a different product to a different market.

i would say.. if people already ordered more.. you are doing something right

If your plan was simply to give away your unwanted cockerels, then whatever you get for them is gravy. That doesn't mean that you'd want to go into business selling them for that price.

The answer to "What should I sell them for?" depends a lot upon your objective.
