I'm only getting 3-4 chicks, and I can only find the chick feed in a 5 pound bag or a 50 pound bag. I feel like the 50 pound bag will be very wasteful. How much food do I need for such a small amount?

I'd personally get the big bag. There is no harm on keeping them on starter indefinitely. I have my entire flock on starter, with oyster shell and grit on the side.
This might be hard to answer, but if you had to estimate...
For 4 chicks, how long would you estimate them to take to get through a 50lb bag of food? Would it go off before they go through it?

My adults and juveniles silkies go through about 50 pounds in about two months. That's a VERY rough guess. I have young birds in there who eat a lot more than the adults.

What breed chicks? Absolutely get the 50#, however not for life. The pellets are far lest wasteful and get from a feed store.

I would say 3 months with the last month depending on size of the breed.

Buff Orpington, Australorp, and Rhode Island Red....I'm thinking one of each. I'd love a Speckled Sussex, but the farm I'm going to buy from does not have any of those at this time.
