Nature is not quiet. ...lol Never has been.

Dogs bark, Wolves Howl, Birds chirp (at 4:30 in the morning) ...lol
Wild cats scream, Cows Moo, and so on.....

I much rather hear any of these noises, Than the man made ones.

Lawn mowers, Garbage trucks, Traffic, Car horns, Electric tools, Hammering, EXT.

Life is full of sounds.

My neighbor that has a dog that barks all the time, is the one complaining about my chickens.

Actually, after some thought I'm actually going to have to look into rehoming my rooster. I don't like the idea of eating fertilized eggs and I can't have too many chickens either. Anyway, what kind of weird chickens would I get from cross breeding a partridge rock with my EE, Light Brahma, Austrolorp or RIR. The plan is to get more chicks or fertile eggs for my hens to hatch next year. I'd really like to just have 8 laying hens. I really would like to have a beautiful rooster, but it wouldn't be aloud to crow too often or mate with my hens. Is that possible? Maybe I could have him neutered?

I don't know if there's anyone around here to do that. My dream is to live on a farm.....then I could have many more chickens and some noisy roosters too!

The same thing happened to me. We live in a very rural area and only have one neighbor within ear shot. She is a real animal lover and has bird aviaries, turtles and cats. We both don't like dogs and neither of us have them. I told her I was getting chickens and NO rooster, I don't like the noise and neither does she. Well, Murray/McMurray gives you one free chicken with your order - needless to say he was a roo and a rare one to boot. Tried to give him away with no luck. Fortunately, the coop is a good distance from the house and secure enough that you can not hear him at night. I asked my neighbor if he was bothering her and they can not hear him unless they are in the garden which is OK. So for now he is in the safety zone - but his days may be numbered if he starts making too much noise or gets any meaner. Here is his picture

i went once to look at a rental property, it was 2 acres of this man's 10 acres, there were farms all around and one housing development of those huge mcmansions that popped up everywhere. well the man told me about how one of the farms had a rooster. i could care less i dont mind the noise, but then he informed me that the ppl in the new houses were always calling the sherriff about the noise.... i decided not to rent there. people who dont understand country life are NOT going to be my neighbors, lol. i honestly dont find roosters very disturbing. my advice would be talk to your neighbors, and ask if a wait and see approach would work out. also my understanding is that if your collecting your eggs everyday, your not going to notice that your eating fertlized eggs.

NOW THATS A ROOSTER !!

If you build a coop and keep your roos in until everyone is comfortable with them in the morning I can not see a problem with keeping an awesum roo.

Chickens go to bed VERY early, but a roo will crow all night sometimes.

However, the coop should quiet his noise and personally i would not mind a bunch a chickes in my neighbors yard.

GETTING FRESH EGGS would excite me ( HINT HINT ).

I give my neighbors fresh eggs every week for no charge.

Lately, even the lady who hated my Guineas are liking them.

She did not know they rid your property of ticks and now she actually bribes them to her house with bread !!!

Oh, the power of the free egg.

I guess it depends on the neighbors. Some might be snooty and citified, regarding thir neighborhood as a gated community where all the lawns should be perfect and nothing should be heard but the sprinklers and mowers on Saturday afternoons.

But if you have neighbors like me, they like the sound of a few chickens and a couple of roosters, and only expect you to be responsible with your kids and animals.

My Roo crows ALL day long-

I have a neighbor that has 2 barking dogs and they bark from sun up to sun down--it is so aggravating. I would much rather hear my Roo than those dogs. But it's just like the people who live along railroad tracks...they get used to it. And if you have a neighbor that can't get used to it, then they need a hobby. Something to occupy their time!!
