Background: eggs under 2 broody hens, one left nest other took them all in. Was a terrible hatch and only had 3 survived. Then on Day 24 (others hatched day 20-21) we had one chirping in an egg that was slated to be tossed- quickly put it on heating pad and 24 hours later we had a chick (needed some help out since it had membrane stuck to it).
She was active and alert but did not stand until 2 1/2 days old -she sat mostly. Since she was not up and running could not give her to mama.
I am so not set up to raise babies-only have them because broody wants babies, but I digress.
In order to get her to eat, we tried some yogurt which she loves. Could not get her to eat or drink otherwise. Now we are on day 5 and she will peck a little at chick starter but prefers to be fed yogurt on a spoon. I mix chick starter in with it and have added some vitamins but I am thinking that she is really spoiled and can not live on yogurt alone
. She has crumbles (same thing she eats in yogurt) available all the time along with water, but does not seem to eat with any vigor. When I can tell she is just too hungry I show her the food but she refuses. Then when she sees a spoon with yogurt, she comes running and scarfs it down.
Any suggestions on how to break this bad habit I have started???? How much yogurt can a chick have each day??
