Hey All
I am new to BYC. Great site btw! My very first post question is...I have recently purchased 40 chicks 15 BO 5 SLW 5 Araucanas 5 LB and 10 RIR. I am planning to sell them at 6 weeks of age. How much should i charge for them like what is an average rate? Should I charge different amounts for different breeds or stay the same?
Thanks Ahead of time

I'd check craigslist to get a feel of what they are selling for in your area. Around here, chicks are about $5, 6-8 week pullets run between $10 and $20 depending on the variety and layers are usually $20-25.

times are hard if you get 12.00 for a 6 month pullet that just started laying you are doing good.

ok thanks sounds good. Also would anyone happen to know what breed a pure grey chick would be?

Pullets in my area are scarce. Most breeds are bought out in advance as chicks. A pullet at 12-20 weeks sell for $15. I think it's also who you market your chicks too. You might do better by posting a flyer at the local organic grocery store or at a farmers market.

Good Luck!

We usually sell our extras at about 4 weeks for about $5, but we're just looking to recoup our costs, and not make money. Around here the Easter Eggers are highly sought after, so we get around $8 for them. It's been very easy for us to find buyers at those prices, so we could probably ask more - especially if the chicks are older.

I think alot depends on your area. Here, just about everyone has chickens... which is both good and bad. Good in the point that people usually have all the supplies they need so they can choose to buy new chickens anytime. Bad, because chickens are not rare here... I would consider myself extremely lucky to sell a 6 month old pullet for $15. $10 is about average. If the chicken is any younger, it wouldn't sell for more than $5... especially if it still needs heat.

That said, there are some areas you could charge alot more. And some breeds do sell for more, but the ones you listed would fall into the regular layer price around here.

Around here, a young layer is about $15 for an Orpington or Barred Rock. $12ish for RIR or Sex Links. I'd pay about $8-10 for a pullet that was out of the brooder, but not laying yet, especially if I had a return guarantee if it ended up being a roo. Someone locally is advertising barred rock chicks for $5 with a return guarantee for roos, which is attractive for someone like me in a residential neighborhood and not wanting to have to deal with getting rid of a noisy roo.
