How NOT to transport ducks....

Haha she'll have a big mess to clean up...
I used to have my hen on my lap (with an old rag underneath) or in a box with the drake on my lap when we decided to take them out for a swim at our dam - its a 12 minute drive, but we used to stop at the shop to grab lunch for when we sat and watch - sooooo many funny looks when people walked past to see me cuddled with my ducks!

Well when I was forced to move and disperse my flock I got in trouble transporting my ducks. I fould a nice lady at work (that i had been giving eggs to) that had what she called a nice little pond and a place that would make a great coop and would love to keep my ducks. So I loaded 24 of them, 2 to a fold flat cardboard moving box, and tied them down well in the back of my pickup truck. Just in case I threw my electric net fence, and charger and that famous book on duck care in the front seat and took off looking for her place in the next county. Well her directions didn't work for me so I stopped for directions 3 times in the new county (See men WILL stop for directions if they don't have someone nagging them). Finally found her place at the end of a dirt road that ran to a lake with houses all around it. Went to the door to be sure I had the right place. The first thing I asked is that lake the nice little pond you told me about. Don't you think it is nice? Its great but it isn't small how are you going to keep the ducks home? Then she took me and showed me the 'coop' a space under the deck on the back where the deck was attached to the main floor with the land falling off toward the lake. You could stand upright on the lake side but it tapered off to nothing at the house side. The ducks will love it but they poop aren't you afraid of the smell and the flies it will draw? well we can hose it out if it is a problem. I got the net fence out of the truck and set it up while I told her we would need a big container of water and put it on the lake side. unloaded the ducks and turned them loose in the pen I had made. Of course they wanted to get away from the strangers and headed for the water and drank and drank and drank. I would get a new box from the truck and everybody would comment on the new addditions. They were all OK but very thirsty. After they all had a drink I demonstrated how to herd ducks and they invited me in for a drink and some talk. I gave them the book and said here is your owners manual but there is no warrenty on the ducks (her Hubby was a car salesman.
By now you are asking where was the trouble, Im getting to it, going home I was stopped by a Sherriff deputy for littering. Somebody (not me!) had put the boxes in the pickup truck but had done nothing to tie them down and I had just one left in the bed when the blue light pulled me over. Well I was nice so he was nice and said he would let me off if I went back and picked all the boxes that had flown out. he asked what I was doing with all the empty boxes, so I told him the duck story. Turns out he was a duck keeper too!~gd

I put my nigerian dwarf goats in my backseat all the time! Fortunately, none have peed but they did poo ... on the tarp I spread out! Good gosh! Ducks in an open box!

Stay, ducky, stay!

Off topic a bit, our cat went to a cattery when we went on holiday and it had a big tummy ache in the kitty box on the way there( the cattery were nice enough to still take her......) EEWWWW!!!! what a mess she was in

At least she did bring something to put them in though, even though it didnt work. It amazes me to no end when people come to the local poultry/livestock sale knowing they are wanting to buy birds, but they dont bring a box or cage to put them in and expect us sellers to have a box or sell our cages with the birds and I sell there regularly so I dont let the cages go with the birds becuase I will need them for the next time I sell.

Oh, people...

Funny how they have such trouble figuring out how to properly do things. It's funny they thought the ducks would be small enough to go in a tiny box like that and wouldn't escape. And I'll bet they had "fun" cleaning out the back of their car after the ducks rode back there.
