i have 15 RIR hens and i get about 10 to 8 eggs a day. i have been wondering how often do i change the nests in the coop? we have 3 nests but for some reason they don't lay in the far one?

It all depends on some different things, if they are spending any time in their besides laying eggs (pooping) then probably more often. But if not i would say 2-3 weeks. I have easy access to pine straw and its free ! plus the chickens love it ! easy disposal and easy gathering ! Like you said my hens prefer certain boxes over the others too. they usely use the ones on the right. :p

We have 2 nests for 6 chickens, they mostly all lay in the same nest. We've been changing the nests weekly. We use straw in the nests, and pine shavings on the floor. The nests have a golf ball in each.

The nests are 1 foot above the floor inside the coop, not sticking out. Recently they've taken to laying on the floor in the corner under the nests. We've tired blocking off that corner and they just lay next to it.
