How often do I need to supply grit?

I use a co-op feed that has grit in the mix.
My layer feed also has oyster shell.

Check the label on your feed source. If it isn't included, grit should be available at all times. Same applies to ground oyster shell if layer feed does not contain it.

In the summer when my birds free range i don't give them any grit just oyster shells, In winter months i put out a big galvanized steel pan with grit and oyster shells mixed together so they can munch on it whenever they feel like it. I believe it is something they need every day. I had no idea some feeds come with it mixed in. To my knowledge none of the feed here has it in there.

LynnP, what is the feed that you give them from co-op called that has the grit in it???? here I have been worrying about grit all along

I just bought from grit for my free range chickens. They went without grit all summer. I figure snow flakes don't make good grit in the winter.
