My girls have been in the coop for 4 months and I have yet to really clean it. It has a dirt floor and we just throw the grass clippings in every time we mow so every other weekend. It doesnt smell, it stays dry inside the coop. The run had grass in it when we started but now it is just dirt. I have never cleaned it out. It is on a slight hill so when it rains the water runs straight through the run. So there is never any standing water in the run. With the heat this summer the run dries out pretty fast. keeping up with the coop and run has been so easy so far with little to no maintenance. Have I just lucked out? I was thinking I would be shoveling **** every other day but I have not had to do that. I also thought it would smell but they dont smell at all to me.

I clean my coop completely 2x a yr.- spring and fall. I spot clean some areas as they need it if there is a poop buildup or too much dust. I use pine shavings, they seem to be the easiest to keep up with and cause the least amount of problems for the chickens. I have also cleaned an totally disinfected the coop on occasions of disease outbreaks. I spread DE on the floor and in the nest boxes to keep bugs down and prevent lice and mites from moving in. I felt a red flag go up when you said grass clippings. As grass clipping break down, they can easily get moldy. This is a cause of respirtory problems in chickens. Also if the chickens eat then, since they are already cut, they might not be able to break off small amount and could cause impacted crop. I'm not sure, but if the grass were dried, like hay, before putting it in, it might not be a problem. From what I understand, using hay or straw and keeping adding layers like you're doing with the grass is a frequently used method and the 2x a yr minimum cleaning is recommended.

Heavy Clean once a year in the fall October. Clean nest boxes when an egg is broken or poop accumulates (folded feed bag exchange). Poop board when needed (pop out vinyl flooring scrap hose and pop back in) easy peasy! Same for floor in coop.
