How often do you visit your chickens?

I think many of us are "Chicken Crazy"

I grew up keeping chickens, but have not had them since childhood. I started with chickens again about 18 months ago, and I just cannot get enough! I have my coffee with them in the morning before work, and they "share" my toast and eggs. Then they spend the day in the backyard with the dogs till Mommy comes home in the afternoon to collect the eggs and give out treats. We clean up the yard, then I sit on the back deck and read while the girls jockey for the best position on my chair. I am in and out for the rest of the evening till bedtime when I close up the house for a safe nights sleep.

lol, when I first got my chicks I got sunburnt from spending so much time under the heatlamp

now I'm prolly in the 6-10 times category depending on work.

We have Adirondack chairs outside of each of our coops/runs and numerous human perches inside as well. I love to sit in the sunshine and read a book while they're out in the pasture (Adirondack chairs there too) and sometimes I just watch them; they're incredibly entertaining. They all come running whenever they see us - it doesn't matter if we have treats or not - and they all love to be picked up.

We have 33 chickens and they're all named, all loved. They hang out in the barn with us when we're working with the horses, help pull weeds when we're gardening... They're rarely ever without human company. People look at me like I'm crazy when I talk about our chickens in the same way that I talk about our dogs and horses but I no longer feel a need to apologize for it. Life is so hard for so many creatures. It brings me joy to know that our feathered peeps are beautifully taken care of and loved.

I am off track right now and I am down there at a minimum of 7 times a day. Everyone thinks im crazy.

But I believe that they are no different than a dog or a cat. They are kind of like family.

Once to open the pop-hole. then to check for eggs, then to let 'em out to free range and then the rest of the day I have only to pop my head out the door and they all come to visit me.
There is always at least one pair of eyes watching for me and they tell all the rest.
I have never been so popular in my life. I have a "fan club".

Since it's been so hot, I go out about once an hour to change the water. Mine get treats 2-3 times per day (frozen peas are their favorite!) and I check for eggs several times per day. I love watching their antics, although lately all I've been seeing is my Barred Rock roo mating with his harem! Although, interestingly, he leaves the Australorps alone!
You're not crazy, don't worry! Unless we all are!

What a great thread! I've never actually thought about how many times I specifically go over to our "Chicken Kingdom". But now that I think of it, DH (who is a chicken convert at this point) and I kind of tag team throughout the day.

1. First thing in am before my coffee I open the door to the pen
2. Mid-morning I clean out the coop and give the chicks some free-range time
3. Before we leave to go out during the day we check on them
4. Mid-afternoon outing
5. Late-afternoon outing
6. Make sure everyone is in before sundown
7. Tuck them in (yes, hanging my head in shame - I do go visit with them after dark)

Wow - that's only 7 times a day - that's almost reasonable and sane!

But oh, I forgot - there are all the times during the day when DH invites our EE into his library to wander around and hang out with him. I guess that counts, too...so much for sanity

I don't think most people do this:

I have to agree, they are kind of like my therapy bird also. Makes for a very good excuse to take a break and just go relax outside. They make me smile. My sons window is right next to their run so if i'm not outside sitting on the ground with them, Im laying on my sons bed watching them out the window. I especially love watching them steal corn kernels from each others mouths and then do chest bumps, lol.
