throw out grit for my pullets?
I know they need it, but wonder how often I should pace it in their run?

Same goes for oyster shell.

I made easy and free holders for both out of plastic coffee cans. I cut a hole in the side opposite the finger grip area and screwed it to the frame of the coop where it is easy for them to see and where they wont poop on it.

I also use the coffee can idea for the hospital crate.

Do not be surprised if it stays full a long time. They often pick up small stones as they scratch around.
