I had a rhode island red a couple years ago who went broody for 2 years. LITERALLY!!!! no kidding! when she first started laying she maybe layed a dozen eggs, then went broody and i had her for 2 years then finally sold her to someone who had eggs to be hatched, she sat in a nesting box through each season 2 times, and got out once in a while to eat and drink and back in there she would go. for 2 years!!!

Now Sourland, don't forget. Terrihb wants broodies too. Spread the love.

While not healthy for a hen, she will STAY broody as long as she has eggs to hatch and no chicks to tend. If you take the chicks as they hatch and leave her with eggs she'll just sit and sit and sit. Til she has chicks to tend of course. Then she'll break and tend to her brood.

My BO had NO eggs under her - stopped laying completely - and stayed broody for a month. Lucky for her (and me) I had five baby chicks arriving last week from MPC. We slipped them underneath her and she is a VERY happy mama!

I'm hoping she will snap out of it and start laying again once she's raised these babies.

Itsy, that must have been very funny to see your hen's reaction when the gosling went swimming!

I had 6 BO hens and none ever went broody. But my RIR / LEGHORN cross went broody at 20 wks old.

my experiences with chickens are weird, they say buff orpingtons, wyandottes, games, bantams, plymouth rocks, cochins, silkies go broody, i have had experience with all these and none have went broody, even my silkies or cochins!!!!! but when i ordered ISA Hybrid chickens, they went broody some of them and my black sex-links, go- figure!, and a couple of rhode island reds have went broody, the ones you wouldn't expect to go broody.

Wonder what my chances will be when the RIR@Minorca mixes get big enough? Maybe than someone will go broody.
