How old before you can tell if its rooster?

I have too many chickens and I want to give a couple away. the thing is, if I give some away I'll be sad if one of the ones I keep turns out to be a rooster. This will be particularly true if it's the one heavy laying chicken we're keeping.

At what age can you tell? I bought sexed chickens, but I know mix ups happen.

Some chicks you can tell real early by the way they behave and others you have to wait until they get some age on them for a clue. One clue to a rooster would be a quick growing comb and wattles that are turning bright pink or red. They usually have thicker thighs and legs too.

Hmmm...

My barred rock is almost 4 weeks. I only have 2 chickens that old, and the other is a brahma. The BR is so much more aggressive than the brahma- which is why I'm wondering. It may just be a breed thing, though. I have 4 babies right now, 2 cochins and 2 BR's and the tiny BR's are much more flighty.

Can you post pictures?

Barred rocks should be easy to sex after a few weeks. for people the have had barred rocks.

And I might be able to help if you have a pic of your Brahma...a cockerals peacomb will be wider and more orangie/red then a pullets..his wattles will be developing too....the pullet will keep a small thin peacomb til she matures more...

Maybe Lucy is just less docile than Sara. Certainly our baby BR's are far less docile than our cochins. (Also about half the size

Join photobucket...they are very easy to use...browse your files where your pics are, upload what you want to your photobucket album...then use the img down from the pic that will be on your album...copy it, come back here place your img in your post and pasted your pic...

Barred rocks should have a single comb, if they look like barred rocks and have a pea comb they may be dominique .
