We have 4 older girls (3 ISA Browns and an Australorp x New Hampshire. They are all about 3 years old now. Maybe even older. The australorp x is laying every day but I haven’t got an egg from any of the ISA’s in about 2 or so weeks. My question is, have these girls passed their laying age?

I recently got part of my breeding group (a blue australorp, black Australorp, light Sussex, 2 barred rock (all pullets) and a rock roo). I’ve also got a few chicks in the brooder so the next generation is sorted.

But have the old girls retired or will they get back into laying soon? Thanks in advance

RSL are famed for reproductive problems, generally starting around year three. Not that every bird will suffer them in year 3, or that most birds will suffer them in year three, but that more than the typical three year old hen of RSL heritage will suffer them.

They will, assuming no problems, continue to lay for many years. Their best year, and their next best year, is behind them, of course. Though they may still lay better than many breeds which are not prolific layers, even in their prime. Their commercial value at year three is as pet food or poultry by-product meal.
