Today dh asked me why I'm still calling my 5.5 week old chicks chicks. They are getting rather big, lol. Since I like to sound like an expert, I told him "because they ARE chicks". So now I need to find out the real answer. When do my chicks grow out of chick-dom?

This is a good question! But I have no idea

Easy way to fix the problem. Get MORE chicks!

Well, I don't think there's a hard and fast rule out there. But if we're going on terms of sexual maturity, eggs are the act of ovulation, so you could call them chicks all the way up until you get your first egg. Then they're officially adults.

I personally stop calling them chicks when they arn't cute anymore

My oldest are 7 weeks and we've moved from saying 'baby chicks' to "the chickens' I doubt we will ever refer to them as pullets, since they all have names. We'll just point them out and say "that's our chicken Lucy"

I have no idea, good question, I am going to say when they leave the brooder they become pullets and cockerels..... until the lay an egg or perform "Rooster Duties" then they are my hens and roos!

I don't know the correct answer........but once the chicks are mostly feathered and not so 'chicky' looking anymore........but still not looking like 'real' chickens, we call them the 'juvies'.

Ah, you are all confirming what I thought. I can pretty much keep calling them chicks as long as I please.
