im new to the chicked raising, and a man wants to sell me chickens that are production red for 7.00 each and said they are a little over 1 yr and 1/2. how old do chickens get before they stop laying?

DON'T!!! That is a major RIP-OFF. Older hybrids like that are worth $1-1.50 a bird around my parts. I can get year old ones for 65 cents. Usually they will lay very well for a while. Just depends on your conditions.

I believe they're about ready to stop laying and go through a molt that will stop egg production for weeks to months, then when they start up again, production will be less. It would be cheaper to raise babies than feed these til they start again.

BTW...

I wouldn't buy them. Those birds are ready for the stew pot. Chances are that this guy knows exactly what he is doing and is just getting rid of old hens. Shame on him, if that is the case.
