How old do the chicks have to be before you know if it is a hen or roo?

It depends on the breed but most are about 6 weeks and can be picked out. Some take till a crow or an egg though.

How do you tell if they are silkies?

Most of my silkies take about 4 months to be certain. The boy combs grow and they start to crow.

My leghorns on the other hand. 3 weeks and the boys are all apparent.
