We are new to chicken keeping. Have been talking about it for a long time and finally decided to go through with it about 3 years ago. Without any experience, only the knowledge gleaned from reading books on the topic, and forums from Backyard Chickens, my husband forged ahead. Two years later, the coop is complete and home to 5 girls. But as you all know, one is never enough. Faced with the need for a quarantine area for the new birds, I convinced him into helping me convert an old dresser and bureau into a new coop and creating another run, to put next door to the existing coop. It turned out so much better than expected. The majority, like 90%, of the materials used on the coop and run have been recycled. Old doors, windows, and cabinets, wood fences and paneling. Dressers! All recycled "found" materials. Why stop there? So we recently built a "Chunnel" between the 2 coops with a door that can be removed once the quarantine is over and the girls have had a chance to get to know each other. I have a feeling we're not done yet. Always something to add. Especially with this chicken math that I've been reading so much about!
