How or whether to compost moldy lay crumbles

Update - I stirred it again and piled a heap of wet grass clippings on top. It is heating up again and the crust and stink are gone - it just took longer than other things to break down . I wonder why it takes so long compared to, say, leaves or coffee grounds?

A while back there was a huge storm and my feed got all wet. It was getting towards the bottom of the bag and the pellets were mostly crumbles and dust, so I just got new feed. The wet feed got kicked behind some boxes and forgotten, and when I found the bag it was beautiful dark compost. My plants loved it!
