How Secure is 1/2" Hardware Cloth...?

Don't need to go 18" deep with apron, just a few inches or even right on top of ground and grass will grow up thru it.
Make sure you use screws and washers to attach.
Nice build!

House & pen look awesome!! If you lived in South Texas, it would do nicely for almost everything that tries to snag chickens. We started with an open house up off the ground built inside the pen, and covered the top with 1/2 inch nylon mesh we use to keep the deer out of the gardens. Had no problems with predators while chickens stayed in coop/pen. After about a year something (probably a coon) managed to wiggle in then out of the coop after killing the last of our chickens. We then covered the whole top, over the nylon mesh, with 1" chicken wire. Bought new chickens on monday & continued with old practice of leaving them loose in the pen at night. After 2 days, one chicken was missing. Looked like it was sleeping next to the fence & was grabbed through chicken wire & horse panels. Wednesday we spent enclosing their house & I have been putting them inside every evening & locking the door. So far that has worked well, but the chickens are not very happy about being netted. Hubby is being smart and staying inside while this is happening thus avoiding being netted himself as I know I must look pretty funny. I like my chickens to roam around during the day, but will not allow that until they start laying in the chicken house. Have had previous experience with origin of Easter Egg hunting with previous flock. Also, have lost several chickens to ariel predators and chicken stupidity (they like to snuggle up to the yard fence where the Golden Retrievers live, & it was hard to explain to the retrievers that they are NOT to retrieve chickens.) So this Tx Hill Country Lady is back to trying her hand at chickens again. We'll see how it goes here.
