How should I rate this transaction?

I would rate them positive. They may not have sent you the book in the condition it was listed, but everyone's opinions are different. Maybe they thought it was good?

The main thing is, they gave you a full refund in a timely manner... That is worth a positive in and of it's self, IMHO.

Well, she promptly refunded your money and didnt ask for you to send the book back. So you got the book for free. And yet, you STILL want to give negative feedback?

On the lighter side... last year one of my friends was looking for a
long out of print title for his wife...something she had a fond memory
of. I don't recall the title.

Some one found him one in a used book store. Pricey thing, around
$250.00

He bought it. Flaws and all.

It wasn't the book he was really after, was it?

I know that on eBay there is specific criteria your books must meet in order to list them in the various categories from "like new" to "acceptable". It's not just the seller's subjective opinion as to what constitutes "good" condition, you have to go by their standards. I don't know if it's the same on Amazon. I know that by eBay's standards a book cannot have any writing in it to be listed as "good". And this book was filled with writing, there was no way the seller could have missed it, and thus should have mentioned it and placed the book in the proper category.

I am certainly willing to be forgiving & generous, especially to a beginner. I usually leave positive feedback for most transactions. And instead of leaving negative feedback for the few poor experiences I typically leave no feedback at all.

But I wanted to get some seller's perspectives. Should I just list it as positive and leave it at that, or add a comment like "book not in condition as described but problem quickly resolved to my satisfaction"?

When something like that happens to me I leave positive feedback and then say something like.... "Small problem with item but seller resolved issue quickly" or something similar.
