How soon after an external pip should the chick hatch ?

Normally up to 24 hours. They still have a lot of yolk-absorbing to do after they ext pip, so be patient. :) You should see it "yawning", which means that it's absorbing yolk. They may or may not chirp, they're more vocal if there are other noisy chicks around them.

My little one took about 18 hrs after pipping to start zipping, then once it started zipping it took 20 minutes to completely hatch. I was up all night but it hatched in the morning. I only really heard it cheeping and saw it rocking when it was zipping. Good luck with your hatch :)

I just had 2 turkeys hatch today! It was 28 hours for one and 33 for the other after the external pip to full leave the egg. The one that took 33 hours zipped and hopped out the shell within 30 minutes after resting for those 32 and 1/2 hours so be patient no matter how nerve wrecking it may be. Neither of them were chirping from what I could hear.

Next question is as I was not sure how many days on they were when I took the eggs from under the broody it was guesswork by candling so I might have locked down a day earlier. Now I have a chick pippping and not zipping 14 hours from the first pip. I am worried there is not enough water in the Brinsea incubator? I quickly lifted the lid to put in a wet tissue. Is that going to help at all?

Do you have a humidity gauge? You should keep it at 60 to 65%. Sometimes I use a cut in half pill bottle with a piece of sponge in it with the water (the sponge helps in case it gets knocked over) to up the humidity. I had one chick externally pip and not hatch out until almost 48 hours later! Two others came out before this little one did, but I was patient and didn't mess with it. Good Luck you never know! :D

I had a chick hatch this morning that took 20 hours from pip to zip, then 5 hours to fully hatch. Some are just slower than others.
The wet tissue might help increase the humidity a little, but like Peppercorngal said, it’s best to rely on a calibrated hygrometer to make sure you have the correct humidity.
Good luck!

This is reassuring even to a Hatching veteran 🐣🐥👍🍹🍾🎉🐔
I totally agreee! I was worried because I could see an external pip and hear no cheeping and see no rocking yesterday afternoon.
Then this morning, a newly hatched chick! So that one was about 12 hours. With no signs in between.
