How soon after hatching do you put your Coturnix on pine shavings?

cant say... never use them. But for what its worth their tendons and ligaments in the hocks and hips should be set within 72 hrs or so of hatch.

I go from the nonskid stuff to wire. I don't use paper towels at my house. I think there is to much waste in them & I also think the price is to high on them so we stopped buying them 2 years ago. The nonskid drawer liner is shake rinse & put back in. At the end of the brooding it is thrown in the washer & put away until next time.

I use the bins as brooders, start them out on old work towels, after the 1st week I move them to... dare I say it? NEWSPAPER!!!

once the tendons and ligaments are set its no biggie... newspapers are readily available, free for the asking if they are a day or so old... they readily degrade in the landfill and work great for chick bedding.... when soilded i simply set up a new clean brooders and transfer everybody over. I can now clean and bleach the soiled brooder and food/ water dishes at my liesure..

My last 2 batches of 250 Coturnix chicks went on shavings when they came out of the incubator. So 24 hours old I guess, never had one problem.
