I just received some BC Marans on Wednesday as day old chicks. I am wondering how soon I should start dusting their living area. When is it safe to apply these chemicals to a young bird? How are the chemicals applied? What to look for if you apply incorrectly or if there is a reaction?

I am trying to be proactive and to prevent any serious ifestations.

I have a product called Viper insect dust, it contains 0.25% Permethrin and the Feed Store guy said to just dust the bedding and the chickens as necessary, but he wasn't sure how young the chicks could be before they get dusted for the first time.

Any guidance will be helpful Thanks, Ron

What is the reason to do it at all?

I wouldn't, unless you know you have an existing mite problem.

The dust doesn't work preventatively, it just kills any mites that're on them at the moment you apply the stuff. If you keep an eye out for mites, you can notice and treat them long before it becomes a major problem.

JMHO, good luck,

Pat
