How Tall Should My Wall Studs Be?

This is more of a construction question than a chicken question. I have no building skills other than what I have been able to glean from YouTube, etc. I am building an 8'x10' chicken coop. It will have a slant roof, from 8' down to 6'. I have a basic building question...

Let's take my 8' wall for example. If my 8' wall, is going to be 8', are my 2x4 studs going to be 8 feet?...or does the 8' total height include the top and bottom plates? A top plate, bottom plate, and cap if I'm going to include that, will total about 4 1/2"...So do I cut 4 1/2" off the studs so the total height will be 8'...OR...does the overall height of the wall come to 8' 4 1/2"?

Your help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Welcome! Build something you can stand up in; I believe that standard wall studs are fine to use without any cutting (NOT a builder here!). They will make an eight ft. wall. Mary

yes you include the top and bottom plate in figuring the total height of the wall.

You can actually buy a 'stud' that's already cut to be the correct length for an 8' wall. That saves you having to cut them

also, just in case you haven't thought about doing it this way, on the 6' wall buy 12' long 2x4's and cut them in half, very little waste that way instead of buying regular studs, and should work out to be just a tad cheaper also

PapaChaz, thanks for the info. BTW, I owe you a pic of my foundation. Foundation is in place but got rained out yesterday so I still need to lay the floor boards. Thanks for your input on my other post. Coop's coming along fine. Hoping you're available for further questions as I move on to the wall framing.

If you are planning to use siding panels for the exterior, they are normally 4' by 8', so if you uses 8' studs plus a top and bottom plate, the panels won't cover. Of course, if you are planning to fill the area between the rafters with the exterior panels, you need to cut the studs even shorter to allow for the rafters.
