Hi all,

I have three Ancona ducklings coming in early May. I plan to use a galvanized trough, kept in our house, for the brooder. We made vacation plans for the end of May, though, and will be leaving the ducklings with a pet boarder. The brooder will need a lid there, just to be on the safe side. The trough is 12" deep. Will I likely need a raised lid to give 3-4 week old ducklings enough head room? Or should 12" be plenty? Thanks for reading.

CalifarmsAR has Anconas. I'm sure she would be pleased to answer your questions.

Is it for food or water?

The trough will be used as the brooder. I was going to leave the top open because it will be in our house, so I had no concerns about a 12" height. The pet boarder, however, will keep it in their training room (in a barn, I believe), so I want to cover the top to be safe. Do you know if they will likely be too tall for it at 3-4 weeks?

I think I’d be to big by 3-4 weeks, well, by 4 weeks I’m pretty sure they will be.
