How the big spider helped...

I don't know what kind of spider it was, it was about 2" across including its spread legs. It had spun a beautiful web that stretched over 3' square across the path. Most of our spiders are harmless to people, and instead are extremely beneficial by catching zillions of mosquitoes & other bothersome bugs. Their biggest bother is when you accidently step into one of their webs and get the sticky strands across your face. I'm sure the spider is none too thrilled about it either. They spread these webs across wide areas, spinning them new every evening, taking them down in the mornings.

Blanche has been behaving herself, going into her cage by herself these past few nights. I don't know if I would get any more guineas, as a friend for Blanche or to replace her when she's gone. I think they're wonderful & don't mind their noise, but I always imagine my neighbors loading their firearms when my guineas get really loud.

Looks like a wolf spider .... http://www.spiderzrule.com/wolf5.htm look down towards the middle of the page. Big hairy and has three sets of eyes.

I got bit by a teeny little one once caught it and sent it to an Entymologist at San Diego State. He told me it was a wolf spider and that there are some species that get as big as the small dinner plate. He actually saw one clear a mess hall in Vietnam back in the sixties. They litterally run down their prey.

I saw a spider once, body the size of my palm, and the legs double that. Oddly, not in the least bit scared of that one, its the tiny poisonous ones that worry me, the big ones I have no trouble with
