We've just had some chicks hatch by 2 of our hens 2 days ago, our hen house is about 3 or 4 feet off the ground. We have been keeping the hens and chicks inside there (its spacious enough) for the last little while with the door blocked because the other chickens seem to be picking on the little ones, is it ok to leave them in as long as they have food and water or should I let the ramp down and let the hens do their thing? Is it ok to let just the hens and chicks outside the coop for a while or are they too young? Should I move them into something that is closer to the ground or just leave them? Any advice or tips would be appreciated

I had a hen hatch out chicks two weeks ago and was very worried about other aggressive hens so I waited 10 days before letting them venture in with the rest of the hens. Momma is very protective and cautious and takes her babies out a little more each day. I had her fenced off from the rest of the flock and just opened the fencing a bit so she and babies can come and go. So far everyone else is curious, but Momma sets them straight.

I always used to build separate coops for my hens and their chicks so i dont have to worry about them, but i have read some many things on BYC about just leaving the hens in the same coop as the others that i decided to try it and they are right, the mama protects the babies and then you dont have the hassle of introducing new chicks in with the flock and since you have two mamas it is even better because one can go off and chase the other chickens away while the one protects the chicks but if you are worried about the other chickens picking on them than you can keep them in the hen house but make sure you let them out once a day to get some fresh air.

How many chicks are their?

Thanks you guys so much for the advice, I thought the mother would come with some sort of instinct like that, I might keep them in for a while longer then let down the ramp so they can come out
