How to assure eggs WON'T hatch?

Until this forum, it had never occurred to me to hatch eggs sold for eating. People without birds, probably have no idea you can hatch eggs you buy, or at all even. Chances are most people wouldn't try hatching them.. unless they knew you didn't want them to

.

However, since you're worried about it, don't sell fertile eggs for eating.

Ok so since you obviously aren't interested in buying eggs, when you advertise eggs, don't advertise that you have a rooster, or what kind of hens they are. Just "Farm Fresh Eggs!" That's all. I mean, would you go around and try to buy eggs from random people as farm eggs, then try to rehatch them later?

If you ALSO want to see hatching eggs out, for more, go ahead and advertise that, but in a different place. ie, if it's a Craigslist ad, don't put $2/doz eating, $20/doz hatching. Make one add for hatching, and one add for eating so people won't buy eating hoping they can hatch them. Other than that, I got nothing.

this is good advice IMO

Geez. I'm looking for biology, not marketing. If you open up a carton of eggs and see nice robin egg blue, you gotta talk about it. It would take no time for someone to figure out that $5 a dozen vs. $60 a dozen is a good deal.

No one has any ideas on how to sterilize fertile eggs? Keeping the rooster away is not an option.

I'm thinking a week in the fridge just above freezing may do the trick.

Refrigerated eggs still hatch. Washing them in a mild bleach solution (like the factory farms use) will remove the bloom and practically make them unhatchable. Why don't you do some experimenting to see what works and what doesnt?

Geez. Legbars arent that rare anymore. I think youre a little paraniod to think the world would be out to hatch your eggs and someone else out there could get their hands on this rare breed.
I dont know anyone that has chickens that would be buying eating eggs and I dont think anyone who wants chickens would go the route of buying eating eggs and turn around and trying hatching them. Its easy enough to find hatching eggs.
And I dont think you need to worry because they are pretty blue. Pretty sure anyone that sees them is gonna think theyre easter eggers or ameraucanas.
I mean who would be silly enough to sell eggs you could sell for $5 each for a couple bucks a dozen?

These are Cream Legbars. Hatching eggs are going for $5+ each right now. Being blue they kinda stand out as something special. I would think that anyone knowing how to hatch eggs would want to try. I sure would.

And this is a bad thing because...?

Forgive me, but I personally cannot fathom why it should matter to you whether they hatch the eggs or not. After all, you're getting paid either way, so I fail to see the detriment if they decided they wanted to try hatching the eggs. Once the transaction is complete, tis then the customer's eggs to do with as they see fit.

Put them in the cartons upside down and then store them in the fridge for a week before selling them? maybe the air cells will get messed up? perhaps the combo of cold and storing them wrong will make them for the most part unhatchable.....
