how to attatch branches as roosts?

I have a 2x4 as the main roost in my small coop but I would like to use a thick branch or two as roosts in the run - but I'm not sure how to try to secure them to the run? Should I screw two or three bookshelf supports to the posts and try attach the branch to the supports?

drill a hole through the branch,, then screw it where ya want.

or you can just use pipe brackets. wherever the pvc is located in your building supply store.

this is what we did for our roosts in the 'big house'. free roosts and cheap hardware!

What does a pipe bracket look like?

I used bookshelf or L-brackets, just one for each end of the branch, and then angled an extra 4" screw thru the branch end and into the wall stud, to discourage it from turning over. Works fine for me, and the brackets make it pretty easy to relocate the roost (like, raising as pullets grow) without damage to the wood of the branch.

Lots of ways to do it, though, and I'm not at all sure there is a single best way.

We nailed mine to the studs. I will have to take them down, because now I have decided to insulate the coop. Here are some pics of what mine look like.

I use something like these that I get from a friend who does fence work. They work nice if you have the right places to attach them.

If it's a good sized branch you can cut it straight and find a scrap piece of 1x4 or piece of plywood for each end. Screw or nail through the 1x4 into the branch twice to keep it from piviting and then use the corners of your 1x4 to nail into the wall. If the distance isn't exactly from end to end of your coop you could use a 2x2 and nail it into the rafters then into your branch exactly where you want it.

Here is how my dh did mine for me. three different diameter branches on one side and three of different diameters on the other side of the room. We put an old wooden ladder in there as the hens on the bottom of the pecking rank like to be by themselves. he did nail brace boards (each board longer than the top one) to the wall first then nailed (air gun)the branches to the boards.
