Last weekend we got two previously healthy looking chickens from a relative that sadly didn't last three days. They were two of three, their sibling having died suddenly a week earlier, but other than that none of the other chickens that had been living in close proximity with have died so it may have been some genetic issue...

However, on the off chance it is some bacterial or viral issue - I'm planning to completely strip down and clean the coop they were in.

I was thinking of using this lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda/baking soda mix http://birds.about.com/od/birdcages/a/homemadecleaner.htm

Then maybe going over the whole lot again with standard dishwashing soap (Fairy Liquid for those in the UK who know the brand) - which I use for most coop and chicken cleaning .

Is this enough to kill off anything lurking? And what about the earth floor of the coop that has three days worth of possibly infectious poop on it??

I think something stronger like Virkon or Jeyes fluid White vinegar straight is good too but Virkon kills lots of bugs and you can use it on the soil cant buy online or at vets best to treat incase, Sorry to hear you have lost the hens not nice

Clean with a soap or cleaner, then spray with a bleach or disinfectant solution, and realize that it's impossible to get rid of nasty organisms on dirt or wooden surfaces. Do you have a diagnosis? Then you can have a better plan. Some things linger a long time, some don't. I hope you don't have other birds. Mary
